Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. Deb S:

How do I start with this review? It was sooooo good!!! Really you should read it! It’s about this girl who falls in love with a fictional character (who of us doesn’t? My book crush: Acheron) Anyway to get back to the story. So this girl is so infatuated about Mr. Darcy that no man can measure up. Untill her roommate pressures her to give some guy a try for 10 dates. You just have to love BFF’s right?

Anyway, you know by now I don’t like giving any spoilers but the story was awesome, the characters were likeable and very well written. I am so team Chad right now! But the author managed to make me like the other guy! And that’s true right? Nobody is just good or just evil. So yeah loved loved loved it! But you also see growth in the main character, who was a little (a lot!) obsessive. Oh and one of my favorite parts? The opinion of Tom Cruise! The people who really know me will understand hihi. So awesome book, I would so recommend it!

Deb T:

I had no idea what to expect about this book and I have to admit I ended up loving it! The book had a great set of characters, even though I ended up hating Matthew, since he was just such an @ss in my opinion. On the other hand, there was so much to LOVE about Chad, he just seemed like the sweetest guy in the world and every woman’s daydream! As for Lizzie, well yeah, she definitely had her eyes set on her own Mr. Darcy, without seeing the great guy that was in front of her the entire time. This is great book for people of all ages and is a super sweet & fun love story. The book has certainly left me curious about Pride and Prejudice.

Review:

When I started this book it started out ok. Then I thought the main character was a little… ahem… bitchy. But on the other hand, it was kinda, a little (yes dragging my feet here) understandable. She had a lot that had happened to her. But still, I was rolling my eyes. And then someone – read: the author – took a pile of bricks and just dropped it on my head. Yes, she did. The story changed from some silly girl who’s probably crazy, to someone who’s not so crazy! I was shocked and did not see that coming! So yeah, good one author, but I would’ve liked to read more after the surprise. But it was a novelette, so I have to be content with that. Good one! I hope you like this one too.

I write fiction involving young people. Mainstream publishing would label my writing as YA or middle grade. Since I’m an indie author, I can skip over the labels and tell you that each one of my stories is unique, can be read and enjoyed by all ages, and almost always has a young person as the protagonist. excerpt

The pool area was wide and reflected the sun on this hot summer day. It was edged with white marble so polished that it looked like pearl. Deck chairs lined the sides of the long pool, which was two lengths more than Olympic-sized. Outside the deck area was the carpeted lawn of the vast backyard, dappled with sun.

Hugh Osterman walked along the side of the pool wearing a heavy terry cloth robe and sandals. In his right hand, he held a martini glass. He ran his left hand through his sandy sun-streaked hair as he looked over his shoulder at the man following him.

“What’s going on? I don’t get it,” Osterman said, stopping at the end of the pool where the flotation chairs were kept.

“They said no,” the man replied. Considering the backdrop, he was incongruously dressed in a dark suit and tie.

“They said no . . . just like that?”

Osterman sat his drink down on the marble surface, and pushed a flotation chair into the deep end of the pool, sending it out and away. Then he peeled off the robe and dove smoothly into the water, emerging next to the floating chair.

“You go back and tell them that we aren’t pleased,” Osterman said sternly, pulling himself up and into the seat of the chair. “You tell them that Hugh Osterman wants to know what’s holding things up—what the problem is.”

The suit just stood at the edge of the pool, opening his jacket against the heat of the day. Osterman paddled to the side, and reached out and retrieved his martini glass. “I take it you have nothing to say about this?” he persisted, despite the other man’s silence.

The suit shook his head.

“Well, what are you waiting for?” Osterman said as he tipped the glass up to his lips. Suddenly, the bottom of the stem shattered. Osterman gurgled as he dropped the glass, blood bubbling from his mouth, an open tear in his neck. He jolted upright in the chair as the suit closed the distance between them, his Colt .38 Super still trained on its victim, its silencer smoldering.

Osterman slowly sat back as the suit pumped more rounds into Osterman’s bare, well-defined chest—the hot shells of his pistol ejecting out and striking the surface of the water, settling to the bottom. His life ended as his body tumbled from the floating chair, his blood a widening crimson slick roughly in the area where his body slipped through.

The suit popped his clip, slipped in a new one, and headed for the sprawling house.

Virtual Book Tour: Bloodfire by Helen Harper

Cover_Bloodfire1

Mackenzie Smith has always known that she was different. Growing up as the only human in a pack of rural shapeshifters will do that to you, but then couple it with some mean fighting skills and a fiery temper and you end up with a woman that few will dare to cross. However, when the only father figure in her life is brutally murdered, and the dangerous Brethren with their predatory Lord Alpha come to investigate, Mack has to not only ensure the physical safety of her adopted family by hiding her apparent humanity, she also has to seek the blood-soaked vengeance that she craves.

excerpt

He came again.  I dully wondered again how I was going to explain not shifting and regenerating when he hit me full on, knocking out my breath.  He raised a paw and extended his claws and scraped them down my cheek before bringing the same claws to his mouth and sucking off the blood.  My blood.  I felt the fire coursing through my entire system.  Anton’s face looked oddly surprised for a second then he did the same with the other cheek before lifting up his entire paw and preparing to strike.  Through the haze of pain, I registered the power that he was preparing to put behind this blow and it occurred to me that this was his plan.  He’d kill me with sanction and solve forever the problem of the little human.  It hadn’t dawned on him that after I died the Brethren would investigate why I’d not shifted and they’d work out I was human.  Then they’d kill everyone.

The rage built up inside me and the flames took over.  He was playing with the pack’s lives.  I sprang to my feet in one movement, ignoring the sudden streak of dizziness.  He was not going to do this.  Anger took over me and flooded my system but I knew with cold clarity what to do.  The fire won.  I sprinted back to the wall, aiming just to the left of his crouched body and ran three steps up before using it as a springboard to spin off.  I was too fast and Anton had no time to turn.  I put my hands round his thick neck and twisted, snapping it in one movement.  My bloodfire roared in approval and he collapsed to the ground.

He was a shifter.  He’d recover.  I wiped a smear away from my cheek and turned and walked painfully out of the room.

Review:

This book has all the things I like in a supernatural romance. Shifters? Check. Sexy sexy hot alpha? Check and check. Strong kick ass female? Check. Interesting storyline? Check.  It started out nice enough, human living with the pack, but being so awesome that they are safer for her being there, I was all for that. And then murder! And mystery! Hot sexy alpha! I was all for taking it slow. And then… she was strong, but not strong enough? What’s up with that? That was the only issue I had with this book. But I think it might have a reason, so I’m going to look for the second book. Because it did drag me in far enough that I want to know more about Mack. And of course more of the alpha. Yumm!

Book Tour: The Shadow of Mudflap by Christi Snow and M.F. Smith

Cover

Blurb

To us, first responders are heroes. But for them, risking their lives is a normal, everyday thing.

Mudflap:

Born the baby of the family, Mudflap has always had something to prove to emerge out of the shadows of his older siblings. He spent eight years as a Special Ops elite sniper and is now a firefighter. But at his heart, he’s just a normal West Texas good old boy who loves his beer, women and football, until the Department of Defense calls him up to say they need his skills again.

Shanae:

Shanae is a first responder of a different sort. She’s a trauma nurse who works on a medical evacuation helicopter team. But while she lives a life full of adrenaline every day, it’s just a cover for her real life, where she hides in the shadows and is secret agent, Shadowfox for the Lubbock Foxtrot Team (LiFT). She’s living the kind of life that most people think exists only in movies and books.

Working for two different branches of the government, Mudflap and Shanae are in a race against time and the terrorists who threaten the very heart of West Texas life, football. They’re working toward the same goal, but find themselves in a confrontation against each other and the lies they’ve each had to hide behind. Can love win out in the end or will the cost be each other and their very lives?

First responders are heroes every day, but this story tells the tale of when they become even more and find love along the way. The key is for them to stay alive so that they can complete their mission and just maybe live happily ever after.

On an ordinary day, they save lives. On an extraordinary day, they save the country.

Review:

We received this book for a honest review. At first I looked at it and went meh… Mudflap? So I thought it would be some book about some sleepy town hero for stuff that well… I dunno. And then I saw it’s proceedings would go to Lubbock Red Cross, so I went ok, I will read it, for a good cause. And then I was blown away! So first off, sorry to the writers to be a stuck up … well you know.

download

Back to the book. They really pulled off a normal town pulled in a James Bond meets Die Hard feel. The good Die Hard mind you. I was captivated and still felt like it was normal, football crazed town from anywhere. The love story was awesome too. No sugarcoating but nothing too harsh either. The more pages I turned, the more exited I got. It was action-packed with a sprinkling of romance. Made me wonder how a real hero does it in real life. But to be brief: buy this book. For real, you will not be sorry.

excerpt

“Who has authorization on-site at the moment then?”
One of the foremen shifted uncomfortably.
“We have two first-aiders underground, but we don’t know if they might be injured too.”
Maud shook her head. “If they’re badly injured, they can go into shock when they get moved. They need a shot first.”
He glanced away. “There’s no one who can do it,” he said simply.
Before she realized what she was saying, Maud replied, “There’s me.”
The yard almost turned as one to stare at her.
The foreman coughed. “Er, ma’am, you know that’s not possible. Women aren’t allowed underground.”
She glared. “Are you prepared to let people die because of that? Robbie Stanham, I knew your mother and God bless her soul, she would be ashamed.”
He flushed under the layer of coal dust and looked away.
“It ain’t safe, ma’am,” he muttered, but she knew he was only saying it for show.
She paused—was she really going to do this? Not only was it dangerous, but even if she made it out again safely, she would be in world of trouble … maybe even lose her job. Harry might be down there … or Danny. Even if they’re not, it’s someone’s husband, someone’s son … you owe it to them.
She squared her shoulders. “Someone get me a helmet.”
By the time she was decked-out in overalls three sizes too big for her with an overlarge helmet weighing down her head, she doubted her sanity. This was crazy—she’d never been underground before. While she supposed she might have been a little curious, both the rules and a well-placed sense of self-preservation had kept it at just curiosity.
She carefully checked her pack—that was the main thing, getting the first-aid supplies down to those who couldn’t be moved safely without them. Focus, Maud. Lives are at stake here … this is what your job is about, remember? She stepped gingerly toward the entrance, where half a dozen waited to go with her. She was grateful, knowing they could be risking discipline as well simply by helping her.
Lord, it looks dark. She peered into the gaping hole in the earth. As though he read her thoughts, one of the men stepped forward and gently flicked on the light on top of her helmet. She smiled a little sheepishly at him and muttered her thanks. The small bulb gave a pale watery glow, only seeming to deepen the shadows. You volunteered for this. No backing out now. She shook herself and stepped into the blackness.
It was like stepping into another world. The darkness was so thick she could barely see a few steps in front of her. The lights from their helmets and the lantern one of the men carried reflected off the gray walls. As they moved away from the entrance, the passages became narrower, the roof lower. Maud could almost feel the dirt and stone pressing in on her. The light of the day didn’t penetrate here and she could feel the cold and damp seeping through the heavy overalls. She tried to take deep breaths, but that just seemed to fill her lungs with dust and she found herself coughing.
The man ahead of her turned back. “Are you okay?”
She forced herself to nod and he smiled briefly at her.
“Always bad your first time down. Turn your collar up and take shallow breaths.”
She did as he suggested and although it helped a little with the dust, she felt the cold settling into her bones. She tried to concentrate on the broad back of the man in front of her.
Lord, she couldn’t imagine doing this every day!
She focused on the monotony, the stepping forward, the lamps set at intervals down the passageway, the stamping of their footsteps and the constant grayness around them. She didn’t even notice the man in front of her had stopped until she nearly ran into the back of him. He turned to her and gestured to a slumped form on the ground. Maud carefully stepped round him, gesturing for the man with the lamp to come forward, as she crouched down beside the fallen miner. The warm glow of the lamp glinted on his blood-stained form and the white shine of bone poking through his shin. She gently touched his shoulder and he turned pain-filled eyes her way.
“Am I dead?” he whispered.
She tried to smile reassuringly. “No, pet. The angels are a great deal prettier than me.”

Review:

This was a very nice read. I think lunch-break, read a few stories.
But it was also very empowering. I loved the different era’s. And even though they were fictional, you know there is a kernel of truth in there. If it wasn’t for these women, standing up for big things, but also little things, where would we be now? The things we take for granted, what would we do without them? I hope there are still inspirational people out there, inspirational women. Not only because of the big things they do, but of the little things as well. You can be the cornerstone of a big thing happening, just because you did the right thing or showed the right example.

excerpt

Ben firmly places his keys into the ignition. He switches the car into reverse, and checks the rear-view mirror. He drapes his muscular arm across the back of my seat and glances over his shoulder before he starts to back up. I feel a tingling sensation spread all over my body, and I can’t resist him anymore. I am totally turned on by his shy and uncertain behavior and it makes me want him more than ever.

“Stop the car.” I shout.

Ben slams on the breaks.

“What is it?” he asks turning white.

“Park the car and turn it off.” I command.

Ben does exactly what I say, when something inside me snaps and climbs across the seat to straddle him. Both his hands find my hips as I passionately kiss him, smelling his intoxicatingly natural scent, mixed in with what I am guessing to be an SPF15. Ben moans and kisses me back running his hands up my sides, and massaging his fingers through my hair.

“You scared me.” Ben pants pulling me into him, and kissing down my neck.

I groan, “I’m sorry. I just need you inside me right now.”

He lets out a chuckle and grabs onto my chin, forcing his lips back onto mine, “You can have me any way you want, Megs.”

And even though we are completely cramped and my back is pressed up against the steering wheel, I don’t care. Right now, I can’t get enough of him. He reaches around behind me and unclips my bra then yanks its out from under my shirt. His sucks on my bottom lip and whispers “Get in the back. Now.” and waits for me to scurry off his erection pressing through his shorts. Seconds later, we are like two high school kids making out in the back seat of a car that doesn’t belong to either of us.
