Review:

When I started this book it started out ok. Then I thought the main character was a little… ahem… bitchy. But on the other hand, it was kinda, a little (yes dragging my feet here) understandable. She had a lot that had happened to her. But still, I was rolling my eyes. And then someone – read: the author – took a pile of bricks and just dropped it on my head. Yes, she did. The story changed from some silly girl who’s probably crazy, to someone who’s not so crazy! I was shocked and did not see that coming! So yeah, good one author, but I would’ve liked to read more after the surprise. But it was a novelette, so I have to be content with that. Good one! I hope you like this one too.

I write fiction involving young people. Mainstream publishing would label my writing as YA or middle grade. Since I’m an indie author, I can skip over the labels and tell you that each one of my stories is unique, can be read and enjoyed by all ages, and almost always has a young person as the protagonist. Authors write what they know and I don’t know old yet. I may someday write about older people, but that’s so far in the future that I can’t see it yet.

Virtual Book Tour: Bloodfire by Helen Harper

Cover_Bloodfire1

Mackenzie Smith has always known that she was different. Growing up as the only human in a pack of rural shapeshifters will do that to you, but then couple it with some mean fighting skills and a fiery temper and you end up with a woman that few will dare to cross. However, when the only father figure in her life is brutally murdered, and the dangerous Brethren with their predatory Lord Alpha come to investigate, Mack has to not only ensure the physical safety of her adopted family by hiding her apparent humanity, she also has to seek the blood-soaked vengeance that she craves.

excerpt

He came again.  I dully wondered again how I was going to explain not shifting and regenerating when he hit me full on, knocking out my breath.  He raised a paw and extended his claws and scraped them down my cheek before bringing the same claws to his mouth and sucking off the blood.  My blood.  I felt the fire coursing through my entire system.  Anton’s face looked oddly surprised for a second then he did the same with the other cheek before lifting up his entire paw and preparing to strike.  Through the haze of pain, I registered the power that he was preparing to put behind this blow and it occurred to me that this was his plan.  He’d kill me with sanction and solve forever the problem of the little human.  It hadn’t dawned on him that after I died the Brethren would investigate why I’d not shifted and they’d work out I was human.  Then they’d kill everyone.

The rage built up inside me and the flames took over.  He was playing with the pack’s lives.  I sprang to my feet in one movement, ignoring the sudden streak of dizziness.  He was not going to do this.  Anger took over me and flooded my system but I knew with cold clarity what to do.  The fire won.  I sprinted back to the wall, aiming just to the left of his crouched body and ran three steps up before using it as a springboard to spin off.  I was too fast and Anton had no time to turn.  I put my hands round his thick neck and twisted, snapping it in one movement.  My bloodfire roared in approval and he collapsed to the ground.

He was a shifter.  He’d recover.  I wiped a smear away from my cheek and turned and walked painfully out of the room.

Review:

This book has all the things I like in a supernatural romance. Shifters? Check. Sexy sexy hot alpha? Check and check. Strong kick ass female? Check. Interesting storyline? Check.  It started out nice enough, human living with the pack, but being so awesome that they are safer for her being there, I was all for that. And then murder! And mystery! Hot sexy alpha! I was all for taking it slow. And then… she was strong, but not strong enough? What’s up with that? That was the only issue I had with this book. But I think it might have a reason, so I’m going to look for the second book. Because it did drag me in far enough that I want to know more about Mack. And of course more of the alpha. Yumm!

Book Tour: Is this all there is by Patricia Mann

is this all there is

Beth Thomas has the perfect life. At thirty-five, she’s married to her college sweetheart, has two adorable kids, and teaches part time at the local university. But when a friend persuades Beth to go dancing on a rare night out, a chance meeting with twenty one year old Dave, one of her former students, changes the course of her life. Loud music, too much to drink, and the thrill of feeling young again lead to an unforgettable kiss that was never supposed to happen. As she tries to put the memory behind her, Dave’s pursuit leaves Beth torn between what her mind says is right and what her heart and body crave.

Patricia Mann’s “Is This All There Is?” introduces readers to the seemingly perfect world of Beth Thomas, a 35-year-old mother and wife who takes a risqué detour from diapers and duty to chart a course into erotica, deception and deceit. As the part-time college professor yields to the overpowering push and pull that follow a magnetic encounter with a former student, Beth is held captive in the seductive space that lingers between desire and reason. Honest and moving, Mann’s work is a touching snapshot of middle-America today, a compelling story about one woman’s struggle to keep up appearances while coming undone.

Review:

Well this book totally surprised me. I thought it would be a sugarsweet fairy tale about an all too real situation and WHAM! The author hit me in the face. No sugarcoating, just real and gritty. You know what the main character is doing is so wrong, but you still kind of understand. You might even be tempted to think that she could not help it, that she kind of deserves that what she is pursuing. I can tell you, the feelings of pain and conflict are jumping out of the page at you. And speaking of jumping, there is this one phone call that scared the bejeezus out of me. It was like I was getting a call! I was feeling guilty and I’m not even remotely in a situation like that. Well done Patricia Mann, well done! There were a few things I thought were not really needed, but they do not take away from the story.  If you like sugarfluff and happy happy from beginning to end. Do you like real? Get.This.Book

Review:

This was a nice story, I liked Colin so much. A man who knows what he wants and goes out and get it. And although I could understand Hope, I think she was making it harder then it needed to be. But it was written very good and you really live along with these characters. Very recognizable to some people I think. The one thing I hated is not even something about the book, it was that there are really petty people out there. But to me it speaks of great writing if the author can get me all riled up over something like that haha! It’s a nice read, so I would recommend.

excerpt

Greg wandered into the small living room. He wasn’t tired enough to go to bed yet, but it felt strange roaming around Nicola’s apartment while she was asleep. Almost as if he was a trespasser. He stood in the middle of the room, and surveyed it. Where would he put his own stuff, his clothes and his few belongings, when he moved in while they house-hunted?

Tomatoes. It came to him all of a sudden why there were none in Nicola’s fridge. She was allergic to them. Just like his mother. Like…her mother?

“Greg, have you thought about what will happen if things are not back to normal?” His father’s words echoed in his head.

“No!” he said with hoarse intensity, fists clenched. “I have not! I will not!”

He flicked off the light switch with one decisive swipe and strode down the hallway. It wasn’t a long hallway, though, and didn’t lend itself to striding, and after only a few steps he was in the bedroom. Greg undressed and walked around the bed, to what had become his side. Nicola stirred, and mumbled something, when he slipped under the covers. He turned on his side and slid over so that their bodies touched, not enough to wake her but enough so he could feel her against him.

Dear God, to never feel her like this again? Never make love to her, never see her eyes glow with warmth when she saw him in the morning? Never hold their children in his arms?

“It isn’t true,” he whispered.

Review:

Have you ever experienced the one that got away? Well read all about that in Ellie Grace’s book This Time around. It’s such a lovely story, modern and still a little conventional in a way. I really like Jake and Ellie, but their friends are likeable too. Very likeable even. It’s not a rollercoaster ride, but it’s a nice read that will bring warm feelings. Well, where ever you want it haha! But there is enough there, love, envy, girl problems, man problems, bitchy little… ahem… But really, I recommend you read it and get to know Jake and Ellie first hand and be happy with them.

excerpt

She took a deep breath before saying, “Donovan. I’m just going to face the elephant in the room. When we met this morning I obviously had no idea who you were and if I had I wouldn’t have spoken to you the way that I did.  Okay?”

Donovan was a little surprised but managed to hold back a laugh. “And what way was that?”  His voice held that same sensual tone that it had in the drugstore.

Okay, so wow, his voice really turned her on.  She felt slightly embarrassed, but what the hell he had flirted too. “Well, I was a bit flirtatious.”

He raised a brow and grinned. “A bit?”

“Cut me some slack, you were just as bad.  Admit it.”  Could that knowing grin of his get any bigger?  She wasn’t sure why, but he was charming the hell out of her.

“As an officer of the court, I’m taking the fifth,” he said jokingly before adding, “I think this is a conversation we should pursue further once we’ve completed our business.”  He paused a brief moment and looked at her intently.   “And I would like to pursue it.”

The low timber of his voice caused her skin to tingle, and she felt her face flush in reaction.  The idea certainly had merits she thought as she studied the hard plains of his face.  God he was hot and he was making her hotter.  She exhaled trying to calm herself before saying, “Do you think we can do that?  Wouldn’t it be a conflict?”

He gave her a slight smile and there seemed to be a sparkle in those blue eyes as he said, “Yeah I think we can do that, but we have business to settle first.”

She nodded in agreement, hoping the meeting went smoothly and they could get back to the more interesting conversation.  Wasn’t that a professional thought?

Blog Tour: Gold Manor Ghost House by Merry Brown

MEDIA KIT Book Cover

Anna thought life was going to be awesome.  She was right…and wrong.

Won her dream job acting in a hit TV series.  Check.

Working with her best friend.  Check.

The set’s haunted and she’s in the middle of a supernatural war.  Uh, check?

Anna Rose Ellington is sixteen and living in Hollywood, hoping to be a star. Anna just landed a major role on Ghost House, TeenTV’s new fall drama.  A show promising to be so hot, Meg Sweet (the reigning teenage diva), signed on for the lead, and Adam Lewis (international rock sensation) is a principal player.

Her dreams are falling into place until she gets on set and begins questioning her sanity.  It’s true she has an unusual dream life, where once in a while her dreams literally come true.  But it’s been a while.  On top of her dreams not staying put in her brain, including the guy she’d been dreaming of for years, the house they’re filming in, Gold Manor, might actually be haunted.  But that’s the least of her worries.

excerpt

“And now for that special musical treat I was telling you about.  As your dessert comes around, our very own Adam Lewis is going to play the latest single with his bandmate, Ewin, from F&L.”

Adam got up on stage and the lead singer appeared from the shadows.  As he got in position, he took off his jersey, put on his leather jacket and strapped a guitar around his shoulder.

As I was saying no to the piece of fried cheesecake, my eyes rested on the pair singing, “The Only One.”

It took a moment for my brain to register what was before me.   I saw clearly, but couldn’t believe.  I was looking at the impossible.

On stage, playing guitar and singing back-up vocals to Ewin Larkin was Leather Jacket Guy.

Leather Jacket Guy was Adam Lewis!

My mind froze as my fork slipped out of my hand and clanged to the floor.  The noise caught the attention of Adam and Ewin.  In mid strum Adam stopped playing.  He threw his guitar to the floor, his face filled with panic.

“Anna, get out of here now.  Get Out!” he shouted.

Interview with the author:

What inspired the author to write this book?

I wrote my first book, The Knowers, because I wanted to write a love story for my boys.  Gold Manor Ghost House came about because I enjoyed the process of creating and writing.  I usually have an idea where the story is going, sit down to write it, and bam!  I’m hit with a twist or direction I didn’t see coming, or a new character joins the narrative.   Many times writing feels like opening presents on my birthday.

Specifically, Gold Manor Ghost House came out of what my boys were up to.  They watch Disney and Nick shows, and I thought it would be interesting to have a story about the people who were on a major series, where the making of the show is only the back drop to what’s really going on.  Unlike what my kids watch, I wanted to write a story that was mysterious, romantic, and dangerous.  I believe Gold Manor Ghost House is just that!

Since what age has Merry been writing?

In high school (late 90’s) I wrote pages and pages of poetry, yet it wasn’t until 2009 that I began to write seriously.  In fact, I began writing because I was under the impression (faulty impression) that one could not both eat and write.  Turns out those two activities aren’t mutually exclusive.

Though I’m relatively new at writing, I can’t imagine not doing it.  Writing is a joy, and I don’t have the words to describe the feeling I get when someone loves one of by books.

Right now I’m writing a sequel to The Knowers, called The Second Fall.  I have to fight the urge to talk to people about that’s happening in that world, because it’s part of my world right now.  Those characters and their concerns are real to me in a way I would not have imagined before I began this journey into writing.

What is Merry’s favorite genre of book to read and/or write?

They are one and the same: YA paranormal and dystopian romances.  The books I’ve written, thus far, are paranormal, though I have an idea for a dystopian book I’m looking forward to getting to in a few years. I teach philosophy, and my favorite philosopher to read is Plato.  Whenever I’m reading and teaching a Platonic dialogue, I wonder why I’m reading anything else. That being said, I love a good, clean, drama-filled story, and YA doesn’t fail to deliver!
