“What are you doing?
I jump, my gaze snapping to the doorway at the harsh whisper. And he’s standing there. The guy from the club. From the street. A matte black jacket covers him now, and if not for the moonlight streaming through the window on the other side of the room, he’d disappear into the thick shadows entirely.
But he’s here. Like the street, here. On the seventh floor of a hospital that’s mostly shut down for the night. Terrified, I back
away.
Or try to.
My legs won’t hold me. The adrenaline of the past moments has shot all my reserves of energy. I crumple back against the pale green curtain and hear the rungs clatter on the metal pole overhead.
He’s at my side in an instant, his strong hands catching me before I can fall farther.
And suddenly, breathing becomes distinctly optional.
“You’re hurt,” he hisses angrily.
“You need your strength. Why are you—”
He cuts off when he glances to the dark-haired girl on the bed, and something about his face goes still. It lasts only a heartbeat, though. Then he turns back to me and the odd expression is gone.
“Come on,” he says rather than continue berating me.
His grip adjusts on me, one arm sliding around my back while the other takes my legs, and he lifts me
effortlessly. Instinctively, my arms wrap around his neck, hanging on tight as he carries me to the hospital bed.
And I can’t breathe. I so can’t breathe. Part of me — the sane, rational, smart-Caitlin part of me — wants to scream bloody murder for the nurse. Because he was there, right when I noticed the fog for the first time.
Right when I realized what was happening to me. It could be his fault for all I know.
But the rest of me isn’t listening. The rest of me is locked on him. On the sensation of his jacket against my bare legs, the fabric warmed by his body. On the way I can feel his muscles moving in his chest when he turns with me in his arms. I bite my lip, all manner of urges and thoughts flying through my head. Only a lifetime of habit crushes them before they take me like wildfire.
Gently, he lowers me to the hospital bed. His arms leave me and he sinks down, folding into the chair at my bedside with fluid ease. He’s comfortable in his body, I can tell. More comfortable than anyone I’ve ever seen. Moonlight touches his skin and shoulders with silver, though much of his face is hidden in the shadow the light casts.
But his eyes are on me. I can see them, barely, in the darkness. They make it difficult to think.
“Who are you?” I whisper.
Skye Malone is a fantasy and paranormal romance author, which means she spends most of her time not-quite-convinced that the things she imagines couldn’t actually exist.
Born and raised in central Illinois, she hopes someday to travel the world — though in the meantime she’ll take any story that whisks her off to a place where the fantastic lives inside the everyday. She loves strong and passionate characters, complex villains, and satisfying endings that stay with you long after the book is closed. An inveterate writer, she can’t go a day without getting her hands on a keyboard, and can usually be found typing away while she listens to all the adventures unfolding in her head.
Skye also writes YA urban fantasy as Megan Joel Peterson and is the author of The Children and the Blood trilogy.

Dark eyes meet mine.
Everything slows, like the world
melts into molasses and in it, I’m stuck. A guy stands in front of me, his body
only inches away, and suddenly, he’s the only one in the room. The dancers fade
into shadows and mist. The music is the low thrum that underscores the world.
And there’s just him. Black skin, dark as I’ve ever seen. Sculpted arms hinting
at a strong body, as if everything of him is muscle and sinew. He’s about my
age, at least six-foot-two, and easily the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid
eyes on. And he smiles like he knows me. Like he’s saying hello.
His hand reaches out. Brushes a
shadow, a girl, and shimmering mist ghosts away from her to caress his arm like
a lover. His smile broadens.
The mist absorbs into his skin.
He nods to me, still friendly.
Still like we’re acquaintances who’ve simply run into one another on the
street. And then he’s gone into the shadows and the crowd comes rushing back
again.
I gasp. Bodies buffet me on all
sides, crushing me, and my exhilaration is shattered. The music is too loud.
The lights spin like deranged kaleidoscopes, blinding me. I’m hot, covered in
sweat, and the emerald green dress is glued to my skin. My pulse is flying but
my body keeps moving like it can’t help itself, like it’s lost to the rush of
swirling lasers, pounding music, and fog.
Fog that’s pouring into me.
My eyes go wide. Flecked with
sparks of color and light, clouds of it rise from the dancers like mist over a
pond. Tendrils stream away from those nearest to me, moving like charmed snakes
to coil around my body, slipping over my dress, my skin, and then vanishing
inside me.
It’s so not a fog machine. Not this. Sweet God, what’s happening?

cantgohome3-2 Book: Can’t Go Home
Author: Angelisa Stone
Genre: New Adult
Release Date: September 26, 2013
Hosted by: Book Enthusiast Promotions

Everyone has secrets; secrets meant to be kept—hidden away where nobody can discover the truth. Adrian O’Donnell (aka: Dre Donley) is no exception. Dre spins tales and half-truths like it’s his job, keeping the reality of his past buried deep within each lie he fabricates. On the other hand, Kathryn Howell is the exception to the rule. She’s a straight-shooter, a tell-it-like-it-is, no filter kind of girl.

Kathryn’s honesty and straightforwardness is the ultimate turn on for a guy like Dre. He’s never met someone so sincere, so full of truth and innocence. Their chemistry is unavoidable, their connection, magnetic. When Dre sets out to make Kathryn fall for him, he doesn’t realize the grave mistake he’s making. Kathryn’s strength and convictions do not falter, even for an irresistible man like Dre. When his past resurfaces, and the lies come tumbling forth, Kathryn must decide if his deceit and betrayal can be forgiven or if the damage is irreparable. Will the truth ultimately destroy the relationship that neither one of them could deny or even attempt to resist?

This novel is for mature readers only, due to language and sexual content.

About_Author_001

568Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal for young adults. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, she can usually be found in front of her writing desk, creating weird and wonderful alternative worlds. Her debut novel The Puppet Spell, published in 2013 by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, inspired by her lifelong love of the fantastical, mythology, and video games. Emma also writes supernatural fantasy novels for older teens and adults. Her next book,Darkness Watching, is the first in the upper-YA/New Adult Darkworld series, and will be published in September 2013 by Curiosity Quills Press.
